What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship is a relationship between an employer and an employee during which the employee, or apprentice, learns a skill of a chosen field. An apprenticeship covers all aspects of the occupation and includes both on and off the job training and related instruction. Apprentices successfully completing the prescribed programme are awarded certificates.
What Kind Of Employer Can Have An Apprentice? Apprenticeships are for companies of all sizes, not just large ones. A programme can be sponsored by a single employer, a large company, a group of employers, local authorities, hospitals etc. |
How Will An Apprenticeship Programme Help An Employer?
If an employer needs trained workers now and in the future, they can benefit from the apprentice programme. Experience indicates that apprentices are more motivated, learn their jobs faster, are more loyal to an employer who helped provide training and are more likely to become supervisors or a person taking responsibility on the job.
The cost of training through apprenticeships is lower, because wages are paid in proportion to skill and abilities of the apprentice with wages advancing at intervals until the apprenticeship is complete. Instructional fees and registrations are covered in part by training grants.
